FIT Pro

Welcome to FIT {pro}, the personal and professional development programme based on FIT Science.

FIT Science is a general psychology developed by Professor Ben (C) Fletcher of the University of Hertfordshire. FIT Science (Framework for Internal Transformation) is an innovative framework based on a 25 year solid research foundation.

One of the most significant findings from this research is the direct correlation between performance and FITness.

FIT Science addresses the limitations of the prevalent way we habitually behave. This kind of automatic behaviour, typically exerts too much control on how we behave in our daily life and, as a consequence, places enormous limits on the way we approach business issues, colleagues, customers and family.

FIT Science programmes break you out of this routine behaviour into a conscious world where you can respond in the most appropriate way with different people, in different situations.

FIT {pro} is a unique on-line programme that enables busy people to gain the benefits of FITness at their own pace and in their own time.

Who do you think you are?

People often don’t achieve everything they’re capable of. FIT {pro} will show you what you are already doing well and what you need to do, differently, to achieve more, with less effort. The programme will help you become more effective in your work, and life in general. It will help you to become yourself, at your very best - the kind of person others want to be around - a well-rounded, confident and happy individual.

When you fill in The FIT Profiler you’ll get instant feedback telling you how FIT you are now but, even more importantly, how you can become even better.

What is FIT all about?

The Knowing – Doing Gap

Is there a gap between what you know you should be doing and what actually happens in practice? For example, at work, you probably already know that it is important to speak up if you don’t understand or don’t agree with something. If you are unhealthy, you probably already know that you need to eat a well balanced diet and take some exercise.

However, even when people already know what they should be doing, there is often “something missing” that prevents them translating this into work based practice. Knowing what should be done is not enough.

Closing the gap between knowing and doing is about you being the person - you need to be - to translate knowledge into practice. In other words, it is about being FIT.

FIT: The Framework for Internal Transformation

FIT, or the Framework for Internal Transformation, identifies the specific steps each individual needs to take to break free of their habits. Becoming FITter helps people become who they want to be, and/or need to be, to achieve their full potential.

The FIT Profiler measures how you behave and think.

Your results will show you the nature, and extent, of the gap between who you are now, compared to who you need to become to achieve what you want from work, and life in general.

The FIT Profiler scores your Outer FITness (your behaviour) and your Inner FITness (your thinking). The results will show you where you could become FITter and reduce your ties to old habits.

The secret is to "Do Something Different".

The programme shows you ways to slowly and progressively venture outside your comfort zone. As you do this, you start to break free of the habit web. With this step by step approach, anyone can increase their levels of FITness.

Outer FITness: The way we behave

FIT Science emphasises that we should all be able to behave in different ways depending on the needs of the situation. Behaving appropriately, or in the optimum way, instead of unconsciously or in a habituated way.

It is important to recognise that who we are now is a result of behaviour that has become habituated often because it has served us in some way in the past. In other words, we do more of what “works” for us, and the more it works for us, the more we do it until it becomes a habit. However, when faced with new challenges such as changing roles, taking on increased responsibility, or working in a changing business environment (i.e. the context of nearly all work roles), our existing repertoire of behaviours inevitably becomes too narrow for the new demands. If we depend on our habituated behaviours, we may well continue to be successful, but in an increasingly effortful, inefficient way. This strain is often revealed in inflated stress scores.

Our habits are not fixed personality traits. FIT Science has shown that just as we learned our habituated behaviours, we can, and will, also learn new behaviours provided we are willing to try and do something different.

FIT {pro} will develop your behavioural flexibility, that is, your potential to do the right thing with anyone in any situation.

There are a number of behavioural ranges that are key to our success as we go through life. They are shown below and are measured by The FIT Profiler.

Assertive - Unassertive
  • Assertive is insisting on your rights, or asking for what you want.
  • Unassertive is not putting yourself forward or asking for what you want.
Conventional – Unconventional
  • Conventional is traditional, formal, according to normal custom.
  • Unconventional is being different and willing to stand out.
Wary - Trusting
  • Wary is being guarded, not readily trusting others.
  • Trusting is believing that others are truthful, well intentioned and reliable.
Unpredictable – Predictable
  • Unpredictable is when others do not know what you will do next.
  • Predictable is when people know what you will do next.
Energetic/driven – Calm/relaxed
  • An energetic person is full of enthusiasm and motivated.
  • A calm and relaxed person is peaceful and not stressed; without tension.
Reactive- Proactive
  • Reactive is responding rather than initiating.
  • Proactive is taking the initiative, foreseeing and acting in advance.
Team orientated – Individual orientated
  • Team orientated is taking a team view, or going along with the group. It’s putting the needs of the group first, whether they are family, friends, team members or the organisation you work for.
  • Individual orientated, is doing your own thing.
Risk Taker- Cautious.
  • Risky is taking risks, acting without regard for the consequences.
  • Cautious is being careful; sceptical; concerned about risks.
Behave as wish – Behave as expected
  • Behave as wish is doing as you want to, not as others want you to.
  • Behave as expected is doing as others would normally expect you to.
Systematic – Spontaneous.
  • Systematic is planning and considering in advance, following a logical process, being orderly.
  • Spontaneous is doing things on the spur of the moment.
Open-minded – single-minded
  • Open minded is being open to new things and new experiences.
  • Single minded is being very focused, knowing what and how.
Extroverted – Introverted
  • Extroverted is outgoing and sociable.
  • Introverted is inward-looking and thoughtful.
Definite – Flexible
  • Definite is being certain and sure.
  • Flexible is open to change, willing and able to adapt.
Gentle – Firm
  • Gentle is mild, kindly and subtle.
  • Firm is resolute, standing by what you think; determined.
Not Lively – Lively
  • Not lively is being still and laid-back.
  • Lively is being bubbly, effusive, full of life and animated.

For some ranges you may be completely flexible. So perhaps you can be either assertive or unassertive according to the situation. But on other ranges you may be less flexible. So maybe you always tend to be introverted when sometimes it would pay you to be more extroverted. Our training programme will help you expand the number of behaviours you are able to deploy. This will increase your effectiveness.

Inner FITness: The way we think

FIT Science has identified five different areas of thinking that are important if we are going to make the best decisions, rather than be ruled by our habits. FIT {pro} will help you to develop them:

Awareness is about knowing what you want, and monitoring your actions to maximise your ability to achieve it. It also means being in tune with the effect you have on other people and “reading” the situation you are in so that you can behave appropriately. Awareness stops you going through life on ‘automatic pilot’ and helps you lead a more intentional life.

Self-responsibility is accepting that what happens in your life is largely down to one person. You. It’s about taking control of your habits, expectations and behaviours. Taking responsibility allows you to take charge of your life and not be a victim. Everyone has failures and setbacks to deal with, but it is what we “do” with these that is important. FIT people see difficult times as an opportunity to learn what to do better next time.

Focus/ balance is being able to focus on what you want but not at the cost of other areas in your life. It might involve getting a good balance between your work and social life, or it might involve giving due attention to the most important aspects of your work. This way you can add more value in your role and generally become a more rounded person and get more from life.

Conscience is doing what you hold to be “right”. Of course, to be FIT, conscience also has to be guided by the other thinking elements. For example, awareness of the potential validity of other points of view.

Fearlessness Very often when you “boil it right down” it is fear that holds us back in life. How much of your life is dictated by your fears? Fearlessness is not allowing fear to govern your life. It’s about approaching the unknown in the same way as the known. This is not the same thing as being reckless though. You might be keen to do something but are fearful, only because it is something you haven’t done before. You don’t have to face everything at once to become fearless, FIT helps you tackle your worries in small steps.
